BBC: Gulnara Karimova spends $240mn for real estate abroad

Gulnara Karimova - the daughter of Uzbekistan's ex-President - used the money obtained through bribery and corruption to buy a house and an airplane from British companies, BBC with reference to The Freedom For Euroasia reports.

Gulnara Karimova spent £200mn or $240mn on real estate from London to Hong Kong.

Oxford University researcher Tom Mayne called Karimova's case one of the biggest cases of bribery and corruption of all time.

However, Karimova and her accomplices have already sold part of the property allegedly acquired with corrupt funds.

According to Freedom For Eurasia, Gulnara Karimova owned a total of 14 real estates in Great Britain, Switzerland, France, Dubai, and Hong Kong.

In Great Britain alone, she bought five houses worth a total of £50mn. One of them was a Surrey princess house with a private lake located west of Buckingham Palace.

The Freedom For Eurasia report names firms based in London and the British Virgin Islands. They served Karimova and her associates to spend the proceeds of crime.

Rustam Madumarov and others who are now alleged to be Karimova's partners are listed in official documents as "beneficial owners" of companies located in Great Britain, Gibraltar, and the Virgin Islands.

Two British companies related to Karimova - Panally and Odenton Management - are mentioned separately in the report. A British company SH Landes provided them with accounting services.

This company later announced that a private plane was purchased through Madumarov for $40mn, and the money came from the Uzbekistan-based mobile phone company "O'zdonrobita".

It was in 2004 that the media reported that Gulnara Karimova had transferred $20mn from "O'zdonrobita" with the help of fake invoices.
