The government of Kazakhstan canceled the ban on the export of onions but imposed temporary restrictions on the volume of exports, the Ministry of Agriculture informs.
Quotas were introduced to export 20,000 tons of onions to the territory of the republic to third countries and the countries of the Eurasian Economic Union (EEU) during April 8-28.
"The allowed export of goods for one applicant should not exceed a total of 500 tons," the message says.
This limit is set for the entire period of the quota. In January 2023, the Ministry of Agriculture of Kazakhstan suspended the export of onions for 3 months. This was done to prevent the mass export of onions and to stabilize prices.
The lack of crops has led to a shortage of agricultural products in several countries of Central Asia, including Tajikistan. As a result, the country imposed restrictions on the export of onions, potatoes, and carrots. The main reasons for the shortage were extreme cold weather and a rise in fuel prices.
For reference, the temporary restriction on the export of onions in Uzbekistan has been canceled since March 15. In order to meet the sharp increase in the price of onions, to meet the domestic demand of the population, and to ensure food safety, a temporary restriction on the export of onions was imposed by the government's order from January 1. This restriction is set to be valid for 4 months. Kyrgyzstan was the first country in Central Asia to cancel the ban on onion export ahead of schedule (from March 3).
