China and Turkmenistan intend to accelerate the implementation of the second phase of the industrial development of Galkynysh, the second largest gas field in the world, the "Neutral Turkmenistan" newspaper wrote.
"This stage will increase the supply of Turkmen gas through a new pipeline to be built across Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan."
The state agency "Turkmen Habarlary" reports that Turkmen President Serdar Berdymukhamedov arrived in China on May 18 on a working visit.
At the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, he will participate in the Central Asia-China Summit in the city of Xi'an and hold a separate meeting with the Chinese leadership.
"A number of documents are envisaged to be signed following the regular summit talks."
CNPC (China), LG, and Hyundai (South Korea), as well as Petrofac and Gulf Oil & Gas Fze (UAE), participated in the first phase of the industrial development of Galkynysh.
The project, with an annual capacity of 30bn cubic meters of gas and for $10bn, was implemented mainly with a loan from the China Development Bank. Work was completed in 2013, and seven years later, the Turkmen government announced that it had repaid the loan by exporting gas.
As of the end of March 2022, the total volume of gas produced since the Galkynysh facilities were launched was 132bn cubic meters. Natural gas is also supplied from Turkmenistan to China from the Bagtyyarlyk contract area, where CNPC has operated since 2007.
From 2009 to December 2022, more than 350bn cubic meters of Turkmen gas was delivered to 27 provinces, municipalities, autonomous regions of China, and the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region in transit through Uzbekistan and Kazakhstan.
