Daryo correspondent, on May 21, visited the Mehr shelter in the Tashkent region with Mehr va Oqibat animal protection society volunteers in Uzbekistan.
The pound has become a home for hundreds of rescued dogs, including those saved from slaughter in March by dedicated volunteers.
It takes time and volunteers' efforts for the rescued dogs to rehabilitate as, in the past, they suffered from cruelty inflicted by humans.
During their visit, volunteers provided treats to all the shelter's residents, helped to clean several enclosures, and took some of the dogs out for a walk.
Sara Buchanan, a new volunteer with Mehr, talked about her impressions of the shelter: "It is amazing that a dedicated group of people could come together to build the infrastructure, administrative offices, and kennels for the dogs combined with the efforts of other indifferent people. Seeing the different kinds of people who come out to volunteer on their days off reminds me that many caring and compassionate people are out there. I encourage everyone to visit the shelter and see how they can make a big difference for these innocent animals by investing some time."
